Throughout the month we are holding roadshows, with support from Hits Radio, in all 10 boroughs of Greater Manchester – offering smokers face-to-face support and advice on how they can free themselves from tobacco.

Support is also available from all GPs and pharmacist as well as online.
A series of television and radio adverts featuring two Greater Manchester ex-smokers will be running for the duration of Stoptober.
Jacub Sabo-Dutten, from Stockport, who features in the adverts said:
“I’ve not smoked for just over a year now. There’s no such word as “can’t”, you can definitely do it.”
Recent figures from the Office for National Statistics show that the of number smokers in the city-region is at a historic low – having fallen by more than 27,000 in the last year. However, 16.2% of the local population continue to smoke.
Greater Manchester set itself an ambition in 2017 to reduce the number of smokers by at least a third by 2021. This would see the percentage of people who smoke fall from 18.4% to 13% or below, resulting in at least 115,000 fewer smokers in just four years.
A reduction of this level and at this pace has never been achieved by any other major global city. Supporting campaigns like Stoptober is just one of many ways we intend to achieve that ambitious goal.
Sarah Price, Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership’s Director for Population Health, said:
“If you’re a smoker, stopping is the best thing you can do to improve your health.
“We know that giving up is hard, especially if you are attempting it on your own. That’s why we have support and advice available all year, including from our pharmacies and GPs. Throughout October, our Stoptober roadshow will be visiting communities around Greater Manchester too.
“Stoptober is a great opportunity to join thousands of other smokers and find extra motivation to free yourself from tobacco.”
Stoptober takes place every year and has supported over 1.9 million people on their quit journey to date.
